Rules: The car had to be sold new in 1938.
For me I would pick the 1938 Lincoln Model K. The car had a 414 cubic inch V12 producing 150hp. It is really a beautiful car that stood out against the Packards and Cadillacs of the late 30s.
What would you buy Oppo?

This from a used car lot after the owner went broke. Supposedly that actually happened during the depression.

I wish I could participate because I’ve got a good one, but kinja wont even let me paste a link as plain text, let alone upload a picture.

You broke rule number one. It has to be NEW

Well just say what car it is!

If I wasn’t doing that well, possibly a Willys:
Assuming I was doing a bit better and in the same vein, a Graham:
Available supercharged, baby.

1938 Bentley Coupe. The one in particular that I was going to post comes up first if you google “1938 Bentley Coupe” kind of a flat olive green w/ red wheels. Christmas edition
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:38 |

Mercedes 540k definitely
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:39 |

Sorry Jared, I guess I’ll take a Lincoln Zephyr Coupe with a V12 Flathead.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:45 |

I wanted to look up a Duesy but they stopped production in 37 and unlike PilotMan I DON’T CHEAT.
Also, Mercury isn’t in production yet in the 30's and I already used the Lincoln Zephyr Flat Head V12 in a different oppo answer today so.....
How about a 1938 Plymouth pickup.

Just looked at it. Very good choice.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:46 |

You can’t go wrong there. That is one of Mercedes finest
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:47 |

I love the teardrop design of the Zephyr. And in all honesty I would probably have bought a used Duesenberg in 38 as well.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:48 |

Haha good reasoning I guess. And it is fun when you can’t pick a Mercury it makes it less predictable
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:53 |

Hahahaha.
I don’t ALWAYS pick Mercury. I’ve picked Willy’s before too
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:55 |

The Lincoln is a great choice, but I’d have to go with an Alfa 8C 2900

If money was no object, ‘38 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic.

Yeah I can’t argue there.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 13:58 |

When did Bugatti go out of business? The 57SC had to be on of their last hurrahs

Will your Graham have visible wheels/tires?!
![]() 01/13/2016 at 14:12 |

Why, a 1938 Maybach DS8 Zeppelin sedan with a 8.0L V12 and Varioex 8-Speed vacuum assist semi-automatic transmission, of course.

lol thank you!!

It would be a Bugatti, theType 57 Series 3 Cabriolet Aravis,
or a Type 57 SC Atlantic
But I do like the Mercedes-Benz 500 k Sport-Roadster

Delahaye 165 cabrio by Figoni et Falaschi.
You’ll see buttons marked S and D on the dash. S stands for “starter” but it’s not. “Starter” is the French for “choke”. “D” is the “le démarreur”, the starter.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 14:58 |

Well that would get confusing. And there is little doubt in my mind the French built some of if not the most beautiful cars of all time.

1938 Audi V16 Type C Streamliner.
Not entirely sure on the ‘model’ year on this, because from what I can gather, it was built in 1937, but Rosemeyer crashed (and died) in 1938.
And if Audi can sell a 2017 Q4 now, then I say it's legit.

If it was my car I’d see if I could get the two knobs the right way up!
Note the reversed (left to right) gearchange pattern and the apparent absence of something. R or AR, according to preference.

I will allow it. And that is a damn good choice by the way

This car does have a very odd interior. I think it is interesting the 200kph is at the 6 o’clock position instead of 4 or 5. The designers must have been having fun when they were putting together this interior.

Opel Admiral

Very cool. That waterfall grill is excellent
![]() 01/13/2016 at 17:58 |

I also like the slits on the side of the hood, as well as the gently sloping rear end.
![]() 01/13/2016 at 17:59 |
|
It is really a great design overall. The slopping rear makes it that much better.

Chevrolet.

I’ll take a couple of more cylinders and styling that looks like a big rig, thank you very much.
![]() 01/27/2016 at 11:26 |

Yes because that is what every luxury car buyer wants. Styling that gets you confused as a truck driver.
